We often get asked about who can be seen in discernment counseling? Just married couples? Couples who are deciding whether to keep dating or break up? Unmarried couples?
The answer is pretty straightforward:
Discernment counseling is appropriate for any couple in a committed, "marriage-like" relationship.
That said, there are some key elements needed to make discernment counseling an option.
►Couples present as “mixed-agenda” couples – one is leaning in and wanting to pursue reconciliation; the other is leaning out and has put divorce on the table.
►The leaning out spouse has not made a final decision to proceed with divorce.
►The leaning in spouse is willing to be the champion for the marriage (read more about this here.)
►There is no recent history of violence in the relationship.
►Neither spouse feels coerced into participation
